ELECTIVES 2023-2024

All Elective class details follow, listed by class title, including ideas for how this carries through the week at home, if at all.  Our elective classes are intended to help our students explore life skills and interests that will help direct their paths.  These are carried out with age-appropriate activities and projects.

Our Elective day is a full day of 5 classes; classes are not offered as single class / a la carte. 

​

PreK/K is $550 for the morning or $750 for the morning plus the afternoon extension activities. Cost is $900/student for academic day for 1st-8th grades, $950 for those in 9th-12th grades for biology/chemistry lab fees. Cost is $950/student for elective day for 1st-12th. There is also a nonrefundable registration fee of $50 per child per day to cover Journey t-shirts, registration software costs, class fees, and miscellaneous

Note on required/optional books: I have added approximate (~) pricing and a link for required and optional books.  Buying a "used" copy of the book is fine and can save you money in many cases.  Prior to purchase, please confirm the "condition" of the book as well as the correct "edition", both are important!   â€‹

PreK-Kindergartners: We have put together a fun, bundle of mixed activities for our littlest learners. We use a multi-sensory approach, integrating movement, music, hands-on activities, outdoor activities, and character-building skills.:

Art Class

Amazing Art & Handcrafts!

This is not your ordinary art class!  Learn a variety of methods and techniques that will grow you as an artist!  Join us in a small class setting that will develop your skills and talents!   During this general art class we will explore making art in many different forms. This will be done using many different styles from drawing to making clay sculptures. Art will include sewing and building while also learning about colors and different painting styles. Ones imagination and creativity will be the only limit for the possibilities of this class. Join this class if you are wanting to expand your creativity while learning about the history of where it comes from.

HeART Studio Art

Studio Art/HeART Studio students will experience a wide variety of methods in painting, pastels, drawing, sculpture, mixed mediums, collage, and more. Inspiration from the Master Creator, His creation, His written Word, worship songs, art movements, famous artists - past and present, will provide a platform that will open the imagination and inspire art students to create. Students will gain art education in elements of art, principles of design, and compositional rules. Our time together is creative. Our art projects are unique. And our hands will get messy!

HeART Studio Art
Brilliant Business

Career & Job Prep:  The class that excites me the most!  Born out of my passion to truly give our kiddos the opportunity to dig in and learn who/what God has planned for them!  Whether your student is college-bound or planning to jump into an apprenticeship, or move directly into the workforce, this is the class for them!  Learn about career choices and work on resumes, references, interviews, and presentation skills.  Join us as we look into the possibilities for the next season of your student's life.

Art Class

Building Your Brilliant Business!

From concept to end product, logos and marketing and sales and everything in between.  Your student will learn all about building a business. The end goal will be to learn how to display and market your students' creations at a 4H fair, farmer's market, local "young artist's" market fair, or even Etsy.  Lots of great learning opportunities for this class!

Chess & Gameschooling  (and the Art of Winning and Losing Gracefully)

Students will develop critical thinking skills, communication skills, self-regulation, creativity, and other skills involved with board gaming. In the course of the year we will learn different types of games including puzzle, cooperative, player vs. player, and strategy. To end the year, the kids will develop their own game!

Ingredients

Cooking and Baking

Cooking and Baking:  Students will learn techniques and methods for cooking and baking, how to meal plan, nutritional concepts,  as well as safe storage principles, and proper clean-up and food safety.  Please take into consideration that we will be working with a variety of ingredients, so we need your consideration and caution for enrolling your child in this class if your child has a food allergy. Dance

 Not just your average dance class! Students will learn a variety of dance styles, including ballet, jazz, hip hop, swing, line dance, and more! Students will learn basic body anatomy, become familiar with space and rhythm awareness, and hone gross and fine motor skills. The class will learn a group dance to perform at the end of the year.

Dance

Daughters of the King!

Your daughter will have an opportunity each week to explore who God has created her to be! They will be introduced to a new virtue each week, and we will have a great time in class learning basic manicures, various hairstyles, facial care, and more! We will also explore important topics like proper etiquette, modesty, and even how to practically handle some tough friendship situations that can arise. This will be a wonderful class for any girl who wants to learn more about being a Daughter of The King!

Entrepreneurial Kids

Running a Business for Kids:  Young kiddos can be business-savvy too!  Let's work together to learn how to choose, develop, and market a product.  Learn how to present and sell, how to work as a team and support each other, and hold a "maker's market" to sell your product.

Prerequisites: Ability to add and subtract 2- and 3-digit numbers

Day/Time: Mondays, 09:00-10:30

Deep Dive into WWII

WWII is a subject that takes hold of kids in history, but many times kids are not able to fully dive deep into this era in history. In this class, we will take our time exploring the rise of dictators, famous battles, the homefront, America and the war, Pacific vs Atlantic, Nazism, the Holocaust, and much more.

Dinosaurs!

Join us in learning about dinosaurs!  Our dinosaurs study will discuss species, discoveries, and adventures that have helped us learn the beauty and details of these giant animals!

Drama / Theater

Are you ready to put your acting, singing and dancing skills to use? Have you desired to learn how to make sets or write scenes for a play? This theatre class will engage and build skills in character formation, stage presence, and set design. We will explore our voice and our body language while having fun. We will join together to put on a musical by the end of the year. This class will build self-confidence and creativity as we explore the magic of the stage.

Guitar

Guitar class for your student musician, led by an experienced guitar player/teacher. There will be a beginning level for beginning players of all ages (1st-12th grades), and an intermediate level for those that have prior playing experience. Guitar purchase and rental are available.

Consumer Math:   Students in 9th-12th grade will be taught the fine art of smart financial decision-making. This book begins by establishing the foundation of ratios, percents, and solving basic algebraic equations (the basics of solving for a missing number).  It then proceeds to cover: measurement, income, credit cards, budgeting, personal banking, borrowing money/loans,  how math applies to "life costs", insurance, home maintenance. , and income taxes.  Math is filtered through the perspective of Christianity and how to properly implement financial knowledge via problem-solving, skill development, and logical decisions.

Leadership/Character

Leadership/Character:  Students in this class will use various books, resources, discussions, situational role-playing, and team-building opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills and build character.  Some themes that we will explore is how to communicate well with others, how to prioritize things/tasks in order to focus on those that will produce long-term emotional, mental, and spiritual growth, and what strategies need to be used to support that growth rather than "just putting a band-aid on it".

Lego Robotics

One of our most-loved classes, by boys and girls alike. Working in pairs, our teams work together to do lego builds plus coding to build fun and engaging vehicles, animals, buildings, machines, and more.  Team members learn to work collaboratively to plan out detailed builds, strategize the coding, and, in some projects, compete against each other.  If your child has already taken our beginning or older classes, please let Diane know so that she can help with proper class placement. Michigan Woods, Water, and Wildlife

A class for your outdoor enthusiast (tailored as age-targeted content) who loves hunting, fishing, and anything outdoors. The class will learn about wildlife behaviors and patterns, as well as navigating the forests by identifying different tree types, animal tracks, and markings. Taught by a certified Hunter's Safety instructor, the students will cover skills and the importance of proper hunter's safety.  The course will look at a variety of water bodies in Michigan and the different species of fish living in them.  Students will explore fishing skills and techniques, as well as understanding fish behavior and patterns. The class will study wildlife management, and an understanding of conservation vs. preservation. Taught from a biblical perspective, the class will include what the Bible says about caring for the land and animals God created.

Minecraft Education

Not your typical day playing Minecraft!  Students will learn collaboration, creative problem-solving, communication, and systems thinking with Minecraft using coursework covering STEM, Coding, SEL, History, Language Arts, inventions & technology, 21st Century Skills, and more!  

 

Students will learn computational thinking and beginning computer science concepts.  Students will use Code Builder to create code using MakeCode word blocks. In this class, students will be able to build out their content knowledge and develop their skills as they create their Minecraft City with code! Students will need to be able to read well and have basic understanding of how to use a computer and mouse.

STEM Unleashed: Math & Science Games 

STEM/Engineering: Students will explore STEM/Engineering activities using everyday items. We will help guide students through hands-on activities that encourage our students to use the processes and approaches of science; the planning and conceptual design of engineering; and the application of technology in their personal skills and abilities. Many activities are based on National Science Education Standards and Standards for Technological Literacy, and are focused on developing abilities in science, math, engineering, and technology.

Vet Science
