ELECTIVES 2022-2023
All Elective class details follow, listed by class title, including ideas for how this carries through the week at home, if at all. Our elective classes are intended to help our students explore life skills and interests that will help direct their paths. These are carried out with age-appropriate activities and projects.

Elective day is a full day, not a la carte - when you register you will choose a full day of classes, 5 classes total per student.

Note on required/optional books: I have added approximate (~) pricing and a link for required and optional books. Buying a "used" copy of the book is fine and can save you money in many cases. Prior to purchase, please confirm the "condition" of the book as well as the correct "edition", both are important!

Wait lists: All of our classes have waitlists. Please use them, don't be discouraged by them. There will be flexibility among our classes as well as families that may shift into other classes as wait lists open up. Wait lists are a good thing and we will do our best to quickly and reasonably accommodate families as we proceed through the enrollment process!

Note: Just below is a schedule of Elective classes, listed by time and including each grade level. The clarity may not be great on our mobile app, sorry. We are working on it!

Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind: For all grades! Odyssey of the mind brings together all kinds of minds: building, engineering, acting, out-of-the-box thinkers! Students will work progressively through the school year on 1-2 large projects and multiple small and impromptu projects. Our teams will learn from each other and compete against each other. Parents are encouraged to join us during our last class of the day as we help set our kiddos up for success and learning to work cooperatively towards a goal. They do all the work; we support them and cheer them on! This class will have a “region” competition in February, and the potential of a state competition in March (dates to be added as soon as we have them), so please let us know if it is not feasible for them timing-wise as the team will be depending on them.
Odyssey of the Mind (OM™) teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem-solvers. Imagine being faced with a problem that requires an original solution. It can be frightening. Now imagine not being afraid to solve that problem – that is what OM members learn. This skill and self-confidence will carry over to all areas of their lives. OM brings the classroom to life as students apply what they learn and combine it with their interests and passions to solve our unique open-ended problems. OM also emphasizes teamwork, budgeting, time management, public speaking, and so much more. This international program is designed to help students at all learning levels grow as individual learners, grow as team members, and to reach their full potential.

STEM/Engineering/Intro to Robotics
STEM/Engineering/Junk Drawer Robotics: Students will explore STEM/Engineering/robotics activities using everyday items, small motors, hand tools, etc. Projects will be scaled to the students’ ages and abilities. We will help guide students through hands-on activities that encourage our students to use the processes and approaches of science; the planning and conceptual design of engineering; and the application of technology in their personal skills and abilities. The activities are based on National Science Education Standards and Standards for Technological Literacy, and are focused on developing abilities in science, math, engineering, and technology. Concepts/projects include: robotic arms, hands, and grippers; moving, power transfer, and locomotion; circuits and connections between mechanical and electronic elements. PLEASE NOTE: At this time, unfortunately we do not have a robotics class for 9th-12th Graders. We have contacted several teams but are unable to make this happen this fall. We hope to have resources and a teacher to truly dive into it in fall 2023 with a full FIRST or VEX robotics option. Thank you.
