ELECTIVE CLASSES
All Elective class details follow, listed by class title, including ideas for how this carries through the week at home, if at all. Our elective classes are intended to help our students explore life skills and interests that will help direct their paths. These are carried out with age-appropriate activities and projects.
Our Elective day is a full day of 5 classes; classes are not offered as single class / a la carte.
PreK/K is $550 for the morning or $750 for the morning plus the afternoon extension activities. Cost is $900/student for academic day for 1st-8th grades, $950 for those in 9th-12th grades for science lab fees. Cost is $950/student for elective day for 1st-12th. There is also a nonrefundable registration fee of $50 per child per day to cover Journey t-shirts, registration software costs, class fees, and miscellaneous.
Note on required/optional books: I have added approximate (~) pricing and a link for required and optional books. Buying a "used" copy of the book is fine and can save you money in many cases. Prior to purchase, please confirm the "condition" of the book as well as the correct "edition", both are important!

PreK-Kindergartners: We have put together a fun, bundle of mixed activities for our littlest learners. We use a multi-sensory approach, integrating movement, music, hands-on activities, outdoor activities, and character-building skills.

American Road Trip
Take a road trip across the United States and study maps, sites, and state "favorites"!

Animal Adaptations & Behaviors
Explore animal adaptations and behaviors. Talk about the importance of color and camouflage, adaptations for self-defense, living in harsh conditions, animal rituals, utilizing and training of service animals, and more!

Art & Handcrafts!
Learn a variety of methods and techniques that will grow you as an artist! We will explore and create art in many different forms, using styles from drawing to working with clay and creating handcrafts. Your imagination and creativity will be the only limit for the possibilities of this class!

ASL American Sign Language
The focus is on expressive and receptive American Sign Language, fingerspelling, and the culture of the Deaf community, including cover themes such as friends and family, activities, school, etc..

Aviation Science & History
This class will dive into the history of airplanes and the science behind flight. Areas of discussion will include a variety of aircrafts and their uses, navigation, pilot training and safety requirements, human and mechanical factors in aviation, and safety management systems.

BOOK Club / Girls of Grace
This dual-topic class will read, discuss, and do projects related to books that exemplify virtues and character qualities that honor God. We will also spend time with self-care, skin, nail & hair care, and modest expression of our inner and outer beauty!

Career investigation
What's Your Path? Let's spend time investigating who God created you to be. What are your passions, your talents, your spiritual gifts? How do you best learn? What are activities and jobs that you love to do, and what do you try to avoid? We will be learning about ourselves, investigating career options, meeting with people from different job backgrounds, building resumes, learn to fill out job applications, do some basic book-keeping/banking, and more!

MEN OF VALOR
Valor: “strength of mind or spirit that enables a person to encounter danger with firmness, courage and decisiveness”. Our young men will be working on life skills, etiquette, chivalry, and leadership skills that honor and bring glory to God. Being a leader, communicating with kindness and clarity, dressing for success, hygiene, skin and hair care, and more!

Building Trades & DIY
** Please note that this is a 3-hour class to be able to adequately provide time to delve into more substantial projects and learning opportunities ** Students will sign up for this class plus 2 single hour classes.
This class will have a $100 additional charge to offset some of the material costs.
Get hands-on experience with planning and carrying out home and DIY projects to enrich and develop your student's growing skills set/experience. This year our students learned the basics of DIY and hands-on experience with several projects, including the basics of working with drywall, electric outlets, mitering corners and installing baseboards, fixing toilets, and more. Specific projects are TBD and will be added shortly!

Cooking and Baking
Students will learn techniques and methods for cooking and baking, how to meal plan, nutritional concepts, as well as safe storage principles, and proper clean-up and food safety. Please take into consideration that we will be working with a variety of ingredients, so please use consideration and caution for enrolling your child in this class if your child has a food allergy. Thank you.

CSI & Fairy Tales, with Green Screen Journalism
We are reporting LIVE from "The Wall", where Mr. Humpty Dumpty is falling to pieces! Was he pushed? Did he trip? We suspect fowl play! Let's dig in to the story and see what our clues tell us, investigate the possibilities, write up our reports and insights, and then prepare to update the community via LIVE! Green screen film footage! This will become a favorite!

Design Careers
We will be stepping into the world of careers in design. Touching base on Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Product Design, Event Design, Floral Design, Merchandise Design and more. We will learn about what these careers look like in a daily setting, the different skills and people that make them run. Creating projects in each design field as we move through the different careers. Such as creating a piece of apparel from reusable items. Designing a brand identity with a logo and marketing elements. Constructing a floral arrangement along side a full tablescape. These projects will help your student learn design skills while allowing them to be innovative with their projects.

Entrepreneurial Kids

Forensics & Green Screen Journalism
The science of forensics, digging into clues to examine and analyze evidence from crime scenes and elsewhere to develop objective findings that can assist in the investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of crime or absolve an innocent person from suspicion. We will discuss crime scenes, physical and biological evidence, forensic tools, forensic careers & specialties, and the judicial system. Labs will include casting footprint / shoe print impressions, using fingerprints, remembering & recording details and events, analyzing fibers, hair identification, and more. Then students will work with filming interviews and cases on green screen.

Gameschooling (and the Art of Winning & Losing Gracefully)
Students will develop critical thinking skills, communication skills, self-regulation, creativity, and other skills involved with board gaming. In the course of the year we will learn different types of games including puzzle, cooperative, player vs. player, and strategy. To end the year, the kids will develop their own game!

GroSSOlogy & MythBusters
Get ready to be totally grossed out by all things sticky, smelly, slimy, gooey, and disgusting. This class is not for the faint of fart, I mean, heart. Activities may or may not involve discussing normal kid-friendly bodily functions and spit/vomit/poo/ pee/mucus/bugs/scat/etc.
And, yes, at some point you will probably end up with more slime at your house.
Mix this with science from the beloved MythBusters, and you have a new favorite class in the making!

Gym
Students will learn and play a variety of sports and activities, indoors and outdoors as weather allows. Team sports, individual challenges, and opportunities to grow physically and mentally!

This class will also do some offsite activities, with signed gym waiver/liability waiver, per the child's availability. There potentially could be additional "event" costs if the group decides to go bowling or such... your family can choose to opt in or out per the event. Open gym will be available for students during that time as well.
KiTchen Science & molecular gastronomy
Please note that this is a 2-hour class commitment!
When Chemistry meets Cooking, amazing creations and connections appear!
Some of the topics for this culinary class: Ratios, density, measurement, chemistry of whipped cream, colloids, suspensions, oils, how cheese is made, food preservation, detergent vs. soap, The Sweet Science of Candymaking, and more!

Lego robotics
One of our most-loved classes, by boys and girls alike. Working in pairs, our teams work together to do lego builds plus coding to build fun and engaging vehicles, animals, buildings, machines, and more. Team members learn to work collaboratively to plan out detailed builds, strategize the coding, and, in some projects, compete against each other.

Music, Movement, & Rhythm
Our kiddos will be learning music, playing instruments, moving to rhythms, and discovering drumming and percussion!

Nature's Bounty: Herbals, foraging, beekeeping, & tree-tapping

This course will include learning about plant identification, safe/proper foraging, and wildcrafting. We will discuss using plants as natural medicine, making tinctures, salves, syrups, soaps, lotions, and more, using herbs and other plants. We will discuss how to make medicines, how and when to use them, and how to store them safely. We will learn to utilize fresh as well as dried herbs. We also will discuss the important role of bees in our ecosystems, discuss beekeeping, and learn about maple syrup and tapping other trees as well!
Kids will set up a binder and bring it each week for them to journal, keep recipes, and maintain printouts of information.

Daughters of the King!
Photography & Yearbook
Students will learn the art of photography through exploration of equipment, lighting, composition, and skill building. In each area, students will complete photo shoot activities, discuss methods and outcomes, and work together to create a Journey yearbook!

Consumer Math: Students in 9th-12th grade will be taught the fine art of smart financial decision-making. This book begins by establishing the foundation of ratios, percents, and solving basic algebraic equations (the basics of solving for a missing number). It then proceeds to cover: measurement, income, credit cards, budgeting, personal banking, borrowing money/loans, how math applies to "life costs", insurance, home maintenance. , and income taxes. Math is filtered through the perspective of Christianity and how to properly implement financial knowledge via problem-solving, skill development, and logical decisions.

STEM Innovators! Math & Science Games
Students will explore STEM/Engineering activities using everyday items. We will help guide students through hands-on activities that encourage our students to use the processes and approaches of science; the planning and conceptual design of engineering; and the application of technology in their personal skills and abilities. Many activities are based on National Science Education Standards and Standards for Technological Literacy, and are focused on developing abilities in science, math, engineering, and technology.

Learn basic survival skills, with topics ranging from building shelter, making fires, navigating with maps, and finding food and water. Learn basic first aid skills that will help you know how to respond in medical emergencies. Get hands on practical skills to prepare for disasters. This was a favorite class last year for many students!
